Choosing the right Ensto enclosure

When choosing an Ensto enclosure, you need to know the operating principles of the equipment to be installed in it and where it will be situated. This will help to correctly determine the required enclosure characteristics. In addition to the dimensions, other factors to consider when choosing an Ensto enclosure include:

  • the material
  • the enclosure class and impact resistance
  • fire class
  • certificates
Enclosure material

Material of Ensto enclosures

In manufacturing our enclosures, Ensto uses only top-quality materials from the world’s leading material suppliers. The right materials ensure the safety of the installed equipment and the users while significantly reducing unnecessary costs that would result from equipment malfunctions. The maintenance needs of Ensto enclosures depend on the material used.

Ensto Cubo standard enclosures

Ensto Cubo standard enclosures are made of the following materials:

  • thermoplastics (ABS and polycarbonate)
  • polyester
  • aluminium

Customer-specific enclosures

We have expert knowledge of a wide range of materials. The materials for Ensto’s customised enclosures and industrial shell solutions are always selected in consultation with the customer. This ensures optimal choices both in terms of manufacturability and technical performance.

Seals for Ensto enclosures

To ensure a high degree of protection, we use sprayed, seamless polyurethane gaskets in our thermoplastic, polyester and aluminium enclosures. An alternative sealing material is silicone. The operating temperatures of the different sealing materials are:

  • Polyurethane: -40 °C to +80 °C
  • Chloroprene (CR): -40 °C to +110 °C
  • Silicone: -50 °C to +150 °C
Enclosure measurements

Ensto enclosure measurements

The size of the enclosure depends on the minimum and/or maximum dimensions of the equipment. When choosing the size, it is also important to take into account any components that may be added later. If additions are likely, make sure that the enclosure is large enough to accommodate them.

Our standard enclosures are available in several sizes. In addition, we can create enclosures according to the dimensions requested by the customer.

Enclosure class

Enclosure class

The enclosure class is an important qualifier for enclosures. It is defined for an empty enclosure, and should be kept at the same level throughout the installation of the enclosure and components. Among other things, this means that the IP code of the cable sealing clamps must be the same or higher than the IP code of the enclosure.

IP code (European standard EN 60529)

Ensto Cubo enclosures are designed for demanding conditions. Their IP codes range from IP55 to IP67. We have also produced customised solutions with for IP69K. These applications are dust-tight and resistant to high pressure and hot water cleaning.

IK code (European standard EN 62262)

Ensto thermoplastic enclosures have IK codes ranging from IK06 to IK10.

Environmental classification UL 50 E

Ensto enclosures are tested to the United States environmental classification UL. This environmental type classification is also known as the NEMA classification. For more information, visit the UL Solutions website at www.ul.com.

Fire class

Fire classes of Ensto enclosures

The fire class is determined by how easily a material will ignite or burn, causing a fire. The requirements for the fire class of the enclosure depend on the purpose of the enclosure. Fire class refers to a material's ability to resist ignition or combustion, other than metal or ceramics. UL Solutions has tested the fire ratings of Ensto enclosures.

Most of our polycarbonate enclosures are tested to the standard of UL 746C and have passed the demanding 5-inch flame test. Our polycarbonate enclosures have a UL 94 V-2 / 5VA fire rating for the material, and our ABS enclosures have a UL 94 HB rating for the material.

Ensto plastic enclosures also meet the glow-wire test of IEC 60695-2-11. See the Ensto Cubo series specifications in the table.

Sertifikaatit

Certified Ensto enclosures

Ensto Cubo enclosures are certified according to the standard EN 62208 (SGS Fimko). Most of our polycarbonate enclosures are also UL-listed and cUL-listed (UL Solutions, File # E 189312).  Many Ensto enclosures have also been granted the Germanischer Lloyd certificate for marine applications.
